MSE invites applications from eligible candidates for Full time or Part time Ph.D. Program in Economics or Management or Interdisciplinary (with Economics/Management) for the year 2022-23.
Award of Degree: Awarded by the Madras School of Economics under its degree granting power as per MSE Act 2020.

Eligibility: (i) Master’s or M.Phil Degree in any of the faculties of: Economics, Finance, Management Science, Social Science, Science and Technology from UGC/AICTE/approved institutions including institutes of national and state importance.
(ii) At least 55% marks in aggregate or conversion of the equivalent grade to percentage.
(iii) A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/MBC/OBC/Differently-Abled. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
(iv) Applicants for full time Ph.D. will be considered if they have valid qualifying tests scores in any of the following tests:
Economics: UGC-JRF; UGC-NET; GATE-Economics; State level SET in Economics; Any other test approved by Nation Testing Agency for PhD admissions in Economics to an Indian University
Management or Inter-disciplinary: UGC-JRF/NET in any Social Science discipline including Management disciplines or any Science disciplines; CAT score within last three years; Any other test approved by Nation Testing Agency for PhD admissions in an Indian University in Management.
(v) Applicants for part-time Ph.D. can be considered without any of these scores provided they have exceptional academic record
Discipline for Ph.D. degree: An applicant can apply for Ph.D. degree in any one of the following:
(iii) Inter-disciplinary between any Science/Technology and Management
(iv) Inter-disciplinary between any Social Science/Science discipline and Economics
Full time/Part-time: (i) The rules for full-time and part-time scholar is prescribed in Oridnance-3.
(ii) At the time of written test/interview part-time candidate should provide employment letter and no objection letter from the employer.
Research Areas: Preference will be given to candidates interested in research areas of Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Industrial Organization, International Trade, Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Behavioural Finance, Asset Pricing, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Finance, Analytics.
Research Fellowship: (i) Meritorious candidates (excluding those with UGC JRF) in the Economics program may be considered for Dr. Devaki Muthiah & Dr. A.C. Muthiah Research Scholarship for a period of three years from the date of joining. (ii) MSE Fellowship for Management or Inter-disciplinary program may be available for exceptionally meritorious candidates. (iii) Those selected for admission without fellowship and after successful completion of coursework within a year, can apply for the ICSSR fellowship as per ICSSR guidelines.
Admission Procedure: (i) There will be two rounds of applications.
(ii) In the first round the applicants will submit an online application form with basic details and upload a few supporting documents in digital form. The list of documents is given in the application form.
(iii) On that basis, only shortlisted applicants will be called for the admission test.
(iv) At the time of admission test, the shortlisted candidates will submit a filled in application form along with a photocopy of the listed documents and original certificates. The application form along with the list of documents will be sent by email at the time of notification to shortlisted candidates for admission test.
(v) Before the personal interview all supporting documents will be verified with the originals. In case there is any discrepancy, the candidate shall be barred from attending the interview.
(vi) Shortlisted applicants with valid UGC-JRF have to appear only for a personal interview. All other shortlisted applicants will appear for a written entrance test and a personal interview.
(vii) The shortlisted applicants will be considered for final selection to the PhD program on the basis of (a) 30% from the last qualified degree exam as per eligibility, (b) 30% from the written test score or UGC-JRF score (c) 40% from personal interview. Candidates with overall cumulative of at least 50% in the total score and a minimum of 50% in the written test and interview (or only interview for UGC-JRF candidates) will only be considered for final selection.
(viii) Decision of the selection committee will be final and candidates will be selected as per supervisor availability in the area of their research interest.
(ix) In case of any health advisory issued by the authorities at the time of written test/personal interview (on travel restrictions and in person interviews) then a modified set of guidelines shall be notified for the admission procedure and test.
Written Test and Interview Procedure:
(i) The written test will be for a maximum of 45 minutes and candidates must answer two questions of 15 marks each.
(ii) Candidates will have to answer one question from Section A and one question from either Section B or C. There will be 4 questions in each section to choose from.
(iii) Section A is common to all candidates and will be on Quantitative Methods; Section B will have questions from Economics and Section C will be from Management Studies. All sections will include post-graduate level syllabus commonly followed in India.
(v) Section A on Quantitative Methods will include topics in Mathematical Methods, Operations Research, Statistics and Econometrics.
(vi) Section B on Economics will include topics listed in the UGC-NET syllabus with emphasis on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and topics on Indian Economy. Section C on Management will include topics in Finance, Marketing, Business Analytics, Corporate Communication.
(vii) Personal interview will be conducted by a panel of faculty from MSE.
(viii) Based on the candidate’s discipline the personal interview will cover topics listed in the written test and also on the research interest mentioned in the statement of purpose.
