J.V.M. Sarma, Professor in charge of the Centre for Public Finance, Madras School of Economics. He was formerly a Professor at the School of Economics, the University of Hyderabad has been involved in public finance, statistical and econometric methods, tax policy research, and teaching for over three decades. He served as Economic Advisor to the Twelfth Finance Commission, Government of India. He has also been associated with several studies for national, international, and state-level governments. Before joining the University of Hyderabad, he was a Senior Fellow at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), Hyderabad, and Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bengaluru. Throughout his career, Dr Sarma’s basic research interests have been statistical and econometric methods and their applications in public finance, public policy design, corporate finance, and international taxation. Dr. Sarma has been actively involved in public policy reforms in the country, having been a member of several committees such as the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Reforms Committee, Andhra Pradesh Fiscal Reforms Implementation Committee, Gujarat State Public Finance Reform Committee, Central Excise Working Group, and Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, Government of India. He was Visiting Fellow of the Ford Foundation (at Economic Growth Centre, Yale University, USA) and (Indo-Canadian Foundation, University of Toronto, Canada), Consultant to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. Presently, he advises the Governments of Nepal, Bangladesh, Laos, Bhutan, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka on matters relating to public finance management. Dr Sarma has authored six books, undertaken several policy research projects, and published numerous papers in reputable journals. His most recent work is the textbook - Public Finance: Principles and Practices, which is being published by the Oxford University Press.
