Accreditation by the National
Assessment and Accreditation Council
In August 2003, a Peer Team of the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council (NAAC) (of the UGC) visited MSE and
carried out a thorough assessment of the School’s work and
its quality. On the basis of this assessment, the
Accreditation Committee of the NAAC has accredited MSE with
‘A’ Grade for a period of five years. A copy of the
certificate of accreditation is attached.
The Peer Team of the NAAC made the following observations
under the heading “Overall Analysis” in its draft report on
institutional accreditation of MSE:
“The Peer Team, after going through the Self-Study Report
and assessing the various academic and infrastructure
facilities, is very much impressed by the notable progress
of Madras School of Economics in translating into action its
vision and goals of advancement of the frontiers of
knowledge in the domain of higher learning and research in
Economics. The institution has earned a good reputation for
imparting quality education in economics to the younger
generation. The institution has an added name throughout the
country for its critical and policy oriented research
output. The teachers and staff have imbibed the spirit of
academic excellence and service to the society. Teaching,
learning and evaluation get their rightful emphasis in the
institution. One can also discern high research culture
among faculty members. The institution has been successful
in mobilizing sizeable resources for research from various
agencies.
Organization and financial management are efficient and
transparent. Infrastructure facilities are good on the
campus. The institution has several healthy practices to its
credit which would promote the all-round personality
development of the students. Further, one could also see an
atmosphere of learning and harmony of vision in the academic
fraternity of this institution. It is indeed gratifying to
note that the institution has been able to sensitize the
students of not only of Tamil Nadu but also other states
regarding the utility of quality higher education in
economics.
The administration of the institution is transparent and
encourages democratic participatory interactions with
teachers, non-teaching staff and students. An appreciable
functional relationship between this institution and Madras
and Anna Universities is apparent.”
The Peer Team also made a number of suggestions for the
sustained growth and advancement of MSE. The important ones
being the following:
 |
Development programmes of new Centers of
Excellence, varied facilities for newer research
projects and the likely increase in demand for
students’ facilities are to be integrated into a
master plan for the future development of the
institution. Some more land may be procured for
future needs. A time-bound and prioritized execution
of such a plan would be highly desirable. |
 |
It is a good move to get the Deemed to be
University Status for MSE. For achieving this goal,
the academic and physical facilities have to be
expanded apart from mobilizing more financial
resources. |
 |
Since the institution has varied expertise, it
may think of organizing different useful training
programmes. |
